Statement from Joshua Simmons, Candidate for Coral Springs City Commission, Proposes a New Way Forward With Incremental Tax Plan

Candidate for Coral Springs City Commission Proposes a New Way Forward With Incremental Tax Plan:

The proposal of a tax increase in our city has divided many of us. At the end of the day, I believe that we all want to ensure that Coral Springs remains a city that offers exceptional services to its residents and remains affordable to those families who have grown their roots here. This goal should be met with an incremental tax increase.

If we continue down our current path, the City will not be in a position to financially sustain itself and the services provided to us. An incremental tax increase from a millage rate of 4.7982 to 5.7982 will not only allow the city to be able to take care of some of its most pressing needs, but it will also ensure that residents don't get the rug pulled from up under them with a 26% tax increase. Within two years, we will be able to assess our growth and decide what further measures the city needs to take to satisfy all residents and keep Coral Springs a beautiful and growing community.

I have spoken with many people in this city and we agree that it is vital to engage people in these conversations so that the decision process is transparent and inclusive. Residents should know exactly where their tax dollars are going and why. It is important that we focus on a long-term growth and recovery plan. I encourage the City Commission to consider an incremental tax increase to prevent placing an undue burden on those in our community who would be harmed by such a steep and abrupt 26% tax increase.

I look forward to the hearing, and what our commissioners and our residents have to say about the future they envision for our community.
