Statement from Joshua Simmons In Remembrance Of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Today we honor Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and on this day, I wish to transport you to April 16th, 1963. Dr. King has been arrested for the 13th time and now sits in a jail cell in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. King, along with many other civil rights activists had been arrested for “parading without a permit,” when in reality they were protesting and demonstrating against the unfair and unjust laws that enforced segregation in Birmingham.

Statement Regarding Coral Springs Ban on Medical Marijuana Dispensing Organizations and Treatment Centers

I disagree with the decision that the current city commission made yesterday, voting 3-2 in favor of banning medical marijuana dispensing organizations and treatment centers. This is a disservice to our community, and I believe the issue should be re-visited. Part of what #ANewWayForward means is listening to the needs of our residents when it comes to solutions to chronic health and pain issues as well as providing the best and most healthy ways of dealing with horrible diseases such as cancer and Parkinson's. As a community, we need to be here for each other, and as City Commissioner I will work everyday to uphold this principle.

Statement from Joshua Simmons, Candidate for Coral Springs City Commission, Proposes a New Way Forward With Incremental Tax Plan

The proposal of a tax increase in our city has divided many of us. At the end of the day, I believe that we all want to ensure that Coral Springs remains a city that offers exceptional services to its residents and remains affordable to those families who have grown their roots here. This goal should be met with an incremental tax increase...

Community Leader and Educator Joshua Simmons Releases Campaign Video Announcing Candidacy for Coral Springs City Commission, Seat 4

Coral Springs, Fla. – Ready to turn his love of the city into public service, Coral Springs resident Joshua Simmons is excited to announce that he is running for Coral Springs City Commission, Seat 4 with a short video, now live on his campaign’s Facebook page.  “Having lived, worked, studied, and volunteered in Coral Springs over the years, I am motivated to help this beautiful city move forward in a positive direction,” said Simmons. “Coral Springs has grown over the years and is on the verge of being the jewel of Northwest Broward. However, before we can get there, I believe our City needs a slight course correction. It will be my mission, as Commissioner, to lead that journey, and this mission is why I have chosen ‘A New Way Forward’ as my campaign slogan”

Simmons moved to Coral Springs in 2011 to help raise his sister while his single mother served in the United States Navy, becoming his sister’s legal guardian at the age of 22. After earning his Bachelors of Art in Political Science at Florida Atlantic University and successfully completing his Masters in Psychology, Simmons chose to stay in Coral Springs, working as a mental health therapist before taking a position as a Broward County Public School Teacher at Pompano Beach Middle School. He will teach at Coral Springs High beginning Fall of 2017.

Citing the importance of strong local economy and resident inclusion, Simmons pledges to strengthen Coral Springs though smart development decisions that will allow Coral Springs to become a hub for vibrant local businesses, successful schools, and healthy families. “It is important that we work to protect resident’s property values and take proactive measures to revitalize our city and neighborhoods,” Simmons stated. “A strong economy is the backbone to support quality education, programs for senior citizens, and a higher standard of living for our residents. Students should feel safe in their schools and neighborhoods, businesses should strive to have a Coral Springs location, and families should be proud to live here.”

“One of the beautiful things about Coral Springs is the city’s emphasis on volunteerism. Over the years this has inspired me to get involved as a resident and I currently serve on the Customer Involved Government Committee, Martin Luther King Jr Committee, the Multicultural Committee and the Broward County Human Rights Board. I also enjoy volunteering at the many city events that Coral Springs hosts each year, such as the Coral Springs Festival of the Arts and Worldfest,” said Simmons. “I’ve seen first hand all that Coral Springs has to offer, and it is my pledge to do all that I can to achieve that potential.
